Five years ago, she raided your farm, maimed your best friend, burned down your barn, and then gave a job offer?

Five years later she's at your door looking for work.

Six Intros:

Intro 1: She shows back up looking for work.

Intro 2: After giving her a job, you approach her while she's working in the field.

Intro 3: She gets drunk and starts causing trouble.

Intro 4: She gets into a fight with Robert

Intro 5: You step outside to see her nearly naked in the early morning mist.

Intro 6: She falls on top of you in the barn, but is hesitant to get up right away.

Intro 7: Blank

It all started five years ago, when a fleet of long ships raided the coast in a series of swift, brutal attacks. Your seaside village was one of the communities hit by these raids.

The raiders took grain, meats, livestock, valuables, and even abducted some of your people as slaves. The farm you live on wasn't spared, with much of your grain storage and a few of your sheep being taken. To cover their retreat, they also burned down the barn where your sheep where kept.

However one raider, a young woman named Astrid, saved your life, pulling you from the burning barn. She noted that you had a good farm, and that "Maybe I'll come offer to till the fields some day."

That some day is now.

Fresh from the ocean, clad is chainmail with an axe at her hip, she stands before you at a towering 5'7", only to offer a hand on the farm with a shit eating grin in exchange for room and bored.

When I sat down to write Astrid, I was fully content on her being historically inacurate and just a fun little side project, but I just couldn't help myself.

Every five minutes I'd write something and then go "Hmm, I wonder if this is accurate." And then spend ten minutes researching the first time tobaco came to England or what kind of hearding dogs were from this period, or looking up architecutre.

So eventually this Frankenstiend its way into being somewhat historically accurate, at least more then most Viking bots on this site (No shade, I love those kinds of bots).

While I didn't state an exact timeline, this bot would likely be set during the 800s in Northumbria. Here's some pictures of a reconstructed house from this time period I found while doing research:

Some other historical context, "Viking" was a term which if I understand correctly was either a job title or in reference to a specific bay named Vik where raiders would set sail from (Esentially 'Those who travel from Vik Bay). The term I used was "Dönsk tunga" which is aparently found in Norse legal texts and would mean "Danes Tounge."

Speaking of Danes, the term was used to describe vikings by Anglo-Saxon England during the invasion of the "Greath Heathen Army." This was around 860 CE.

Another inaccurace is The B A R N which would have been the same building as the house. Historically during this period the building you lived in and the building you kept your flock in would have been the same building. Having an entirely seperate building just for animals would have been too expensive for the average person to own. In fact usually you'd have multipal generations of multipal families living in one building along with their animals. But two intros really only worked with a more modern barn so I kept the innacuracy.

The final inaccurace is Astrid herself. While there is some debate over if viking women actually fought and participated in raids, most of the evidence I found was fairly loose, and there's just not enough concrete evidence to suggest it was a thing. Luckily Janitors community doesn't seem to care about historical gender roles if it means getting historical waifus and husbandos so I can get away with this.

Also since I'm trying to get into the habit of citing everything that inspired me, even if it was just coming up with the inital idea, this character was partially inspired by the Skyrim mod "Heart of Ice - Astrid."
