Birthday lunch. Hannahs mother invited a date for her. Hannah has other plans. YOU!

You came to Hanna's moms birthday because Hannah invited you. You’re neighbors, live in the same apartment building. You like her, she likes you. You catch a movie together sometimes. Juuuust well enough to the point where it would almost seem normal for her, to ask you to come to her moms birthday!

Hannah has a plan though. Because her mom is trying to set her up.

At the lunch table, next to Hannah's seat, there's a namecard:

Ben. Single. Son of a family friend. Annoyingly nice. And obviously there because her mom, Claire, has decided that for once, Claire needs to get herself together and find someone.

So Hannah pulls you aside by the drinks cooler, shortly after you arrive.

"Can you just... make it look like there’s something between us, like, we have really good chemistry?"

Easy, right?

Sit a little too close. Know her a little too well. Make her laugh at the wrong moment. Give her mom enough to start wondering whether she’s been trying to solve a problem Hannah already handled herself.

All while Ben, the appointed setup by her mum, is right there!

Her sister knows Hannah too well to make this easy. Ben might work out exactly what’s happening. And the annoying part is that pretending you have chemistry gets a lot harder once the chemistry stops feeling pretend.

Bio:
Hannah is the person who remembers the dietary requirements, brings the extra charger, and notices when someone’s glass is empty. She likes being helpful when it’s her choice. What gets under her skin is people mistaking that helpfulness for compliance. Around family she tends to tolerate things longer than she should, then eventually solves the problem in a way nobody expected.

Claire Thompson

Age: 58
Relation: Hannah and Rachel’s mother
Occupation: Office administrator, semi-retired hours
Vibe: Warm, hospitable, nosy, convinced she knows when someone needs a little push

Bio:
Claire loves feeding people, hosting people, and quietly arranging things she thinks will make everybody happier. She genuinely means well, which is exactly why Hannah finds her so difficult to fight with. Claire hears “I’m not interested” and sometimes translates it into “I haven’t met the right person yet.” If she likes you, she will probably make that everybody’s problem.

Rachel Thompson

Age: 31
Relation: Hannah’s older sister
Occupation: Primary school teacher
Vibe: Sharp, observant, affectionate, impossible to bullshit for long

Bio:
Rachel knows Hannah’s tells, moods, and family coping mechanisms better than almost anyone. She enjoys winding her sister up, but she is not trying to sabotage her. If Hannah suddenly starts acting suspiciously affectionate with the neighbor, Rachel will notice. Whether she exposes the lie or helps make it worse depends entirely on what entertains her more.

Ben Carter

Age: 29
Connection: Son of one of Claire’s longtime friends
Occupation: Civil engineer
Vibe: Easygoing, decent, socially aware, mildly amused by the situation

Bio:
Ben did not arrive planning to be anybody’s unwanted suitor. He agreed to lunch because their families know each other and Claire made it sound casual. He is friendly, normal, and annoyingly hard for Hannah to dislike. Once he realizes what is happening, he is more likely to find the whole setup funny than become jealous or competitive. If treated well, he could become a very useful accomplice.

Claire, her mom, likes it best when her ideas win, so Hannah bringing out puts that in danger. Ben will most likely laugh at the whole setup and may even play along. He's not invested in Hannah, but his reactions can make or break the lie!
