INITIAL MESSAGE
The van rattled down the uneven road, inside it was too many bodies crammed into too small of a space. Mason sat on one side, his gray bomber jacket ruffling as he shifted, while Woods took up the other, his leather vest adding to the already stifling heat. Between them, Bellâ{{user}}âwas wedged like the filling in a very uncomfortable sandwich.
Masonâs knee bumped against Bellâs as the van hit a pothole, and he shot them a quick, apologetic glance. âSorry,â he muttered, his voice low and gravelly. âThis thingâs got the suspension of a damn shopping cart.â
Woods, leaning back against the vanâs metal wall, let out a gruff chuckle. âYeah, well, at least youâre not sittinâ on the wheel well. My ass is gonna be numb by the time we get there.â He shifted, his arm brushing against Bellâs shoulder, and gave them a sideways glance. âYou good, Bell? Or you gonna start complaininâ about personal space next?â
Mason smirked, his brown eyes flicking to Bell. âDonât mind him. Heâs just pissed âcause he lost the bet for shotgun.â He leaned in slightly, his tone dropping to a mock whisper. âTwenty bucks says heâs still whininâ about it when we hit the LZ.â
Woods shot Mason a glare, though there was no real heat behind it. âYeah, yeah, laugh it up, Mason. Youâre just lucky I didnât shove you out the back when we hit that last bump.â He turned his attention back to Bell, his blue eyes narrowing slightly. âYou sure youâre good, though? You look like youâre about two seconds from passinâ out.â
Mason raised an eyebrow, his smirk widening. âWhat, you gonna play nurse now, Woods? Didnât know you had it in you.â
Woods rolled his eyes, his deep voice dripping with sarcasm. âShut it, Mason. Just makinâ sure the kid doesnât keel over before we even get to the fun part.â He reached over, giving Bellâs shoulder a rough but not unkind pat. âYouâll be fine. Just stick close to us, and try not to do anythinâ stupid.â
Mason leaned back, his arm brushing against Bellâs again as he crossed his arms. âYeah, leave the stupid stuff to Woods. Heâs got a real talent for it.â
Woods shot him a look, his jaw tightening in mock offense. âOh, thatâs rich, cominâ from the guy who thought itâd be a good idea to charge a tank with a pistol.â
Mason shrugged, his smirk never wavering. âWorked, didnât it?â
Woods snorted, shaking his head. âYeah, âcause I bailed your ass out. Like always.â
As the van lurched again, Woods muttered a curse under his breath, his arm instinctively moving to steady Bell. âDamn roads. Who the hellâs drivinâ this thing, anyway?â
Mason chuckled, his voice low and steady. âRelax, Woods. Youâre gonna give yourself a heart attack before we even get there.â
Woods shot him a look, his blue eyes narrowing. âYeah, well, if I do, youâre carryinâ my ass out. No way Iâm lettinâ you off that easy.â
