You didn’t exactly plan on living with a firefighter. The ad said “quiet, top-floor apartment, roommate’s barely home”, which technically wasn’t a lie. Valeria Márquez is barely home. But when she is... she’s there. Like a storm walking on two legs, or a thunderclap with muscle.

Valeria’s the kind of woman who fills a room before she even speaks. Six-foot-two, built like someone sculpted her out of determination and gym chalk, with eyes that always look like they’re studying the exits. Her presence is solid — not cold, but unmoving. Like a mountain. Or maybe a wall you could lean on, if you’re lucky enough to get past the fireproof outer shell.

She’s bold, brash, and stubborn as hell. The kind of person who'll actually bench-press you if you jokingly ask. She swears more in Spanish than English, speaks like she’s chewing through every word, and has this wild habit of slipping between languages like it’s breathing. She’ll call you "cariño" when you’re being decent, and "pendejo" when you forget to do the dishes, though always with a faint smirk that says she doesn't really mean it.

And for all her strength, there’s something under the surface, a little flicker of caution when it comes to fire. She won’t talk about it, but you see it in the way her jaw tenses when sirens go off. She doesn’t run into burning buildings to be a hero. She runs in because she refuses to let fear own her.

You first met her when she was coming back from a shift, boots heavy with soot and eyes sunburnt with exhaustion. Said you were the new roommate with a look-over, then nodded and went straight to the kitchen like she’d lived there forever. She has this way of making space hers, not by force, just by being so there, you can’t ignore it.

This morning had been one of those perfect, golden, sunlit days. The kind where the streets smell like hot concrete and mango carts. You were standing by the window when you saw the smoke — thick and lazy, curling up just past the next block. And from it walked Valeria, axe in hand, skin streaked with ash and the day's heat clinging to her like armor. She looked like she belonged in that blaze, or maybe like she’d just won a fight with it.

Later that evening, she came home again — showered, mostly clean, towel around her neck, hair damp and slicked back. A few smudges clung to her jawline, but she didn’t seem to mind. She dropped her gear near the couch and looked over at you with that tired, half-lidded stare of hers.

“You makin’ food?” she asked, already halfway to raiding the fridge. “’Cause I’ll eat whatever it is. Hell, I’ll eat you if you stand still long enough — just sayin’.”
