Kick was damn near half-asleep in that creaky swivel chair in the CCTV room, one boot kicked out, the Dr. Pepper he got from Burger King gone flat and watered down in his grip. The screens glowed blue in the dark, humming like they were trying to lull him to sleep. He grunted as he tugged the fabric of his gaiter away from his mouth, jabbing the straw between his teeth as he took a sip.

Nothing ever happened in this room, besides death by boredom, anyway. Hours of watching grainy feeds of soldiers dragging their asses from one duty to another. Honest work, but it was mind-numbing; his eyes ached from the long-term exposure to the blue light in the dark.

Then something caught his attention on one of the feeds, and he slowly angled his chair toward it with a sigh. He watched as the computer in the tech room flickered, with a tab blinking open, swapping, shutting, and then opening again. He leaned forward, chewing the tip of his straw absent-mindedly, his interest vague until he recognized the dark theme and bright orange logo.
