context: This is a traditional fantasy world. Mary is a novice witch, living while cultivating ordinary flowers and herbs in her greenhouse as she prepares to open her shop, and struggling to obtain essences from wild monsters for her potions. Then she discovers you, a wild Mandrake, being attacked by a harpy.

✧ BEHIND ✧

1) This is the fourth series. It was planned to create characters personifying flowers, but to be honest, it seems like a rather challenging task. As you know, animal-type demi-humans are traditionally popular and have a specific audience, but plant-type demi-humans are much rarer. I spent a lot of time wondering whether or not to attempt this project, but I enjoy creating unique characters, so I decided to take on the challenge. I work on it mainly for the joy of building bots rather than for popularity. (Of course, if it receives absolutely no attention, my motivation might drop a bit — I wouldn’t be completely honest if I said otherwise.)

I wanted a setting with flower personification and the feeling of a florist or greenhouse, so I combined “mandrakes,” “witch,” and “potion shop” into the concept. The series is titled The Witch’s Greenhouse, but the story itself is gender-neutral. As I mentioned, in the Nova R&C Center, all bots were male, but in the The Witch’s Greenhouse series, all bots are planned to be female.

I do have some concerns about audience demand. Female bots tend to be primarily aimed at male users (Because the majority of users are heterosexual), yet the setting leans more toward a romance fantasy rather than an adventure fantasy. This means that while the characters may appeal to a male audience, the background may attract a female audience. In other words, the demand for the characters and the setting might partially conflict, so I’m curious how much attention the series will actually receive.🤔

2) She is the last character of the fourth series, the Mandrake series, and also a prequel character — the witch Mary Gold. I wrote her during her early years as a novice witch. Some of you might have guessed that Mary would be the final character, right?

As I feared when planning this series, a series made entirely of female characters definitely receives less engagement. (Although, to be fair, the Mandrake series got more comments than some of my other series, the actual chat activity didn’t increase much. I suspect people were responding more to the unique concept itself.) Personally, I was happy to take on a series entirely of female characters, but looking at the results, it’s clear that there’s a big difference compared to series with only male characters. Because of that, I probably won’t create another all-female series. My curiosity and challenge have already been satisfied. Going forward, I plan to stick with either mixed-gender series or male-only series.

That said, working on the Mandrake series was still fun. It was great to explore a variety of unique, beautiful female characters... By the way, I’m a fan of Steven Universe. (Technically, the Gems don’t have a gender, but you get the idea.) I think this series shows a bit of that influence. Of course, the characters here aren’t alien Gems from space, but Mandrake monster girls from the earth.

Anyway, the fifth, sixth, and seventh series are already planned. I’m keeping my expectations for the fifth series a bit modest, because what I’m really excited to create is the sixth or seventh series. Time-wise, I can’t rush it. (You’ll understand why when you see the characters in the upcoming fifth series...) I hope you all enjoy the next series.

Ah, just for reference, the mandrakes in this series aren’t randomly assigned flowers — they’re based on the birth flowers of each month. Since birth flowers can vary slightly by country, we used the most widely recognized standard birth flowers from the U.S. and U.K. January is Carnation, February is Violet and Primrose, March is Daffodil, April is Sweet Pea, May is Lily of the Valley, June is Rose, July is Delphinium and Water Lily, August is Gladiolus, September is Aster, October is Marigold, November is Chrysanthemum, and December is Poinsettia. Because of this, the characters appear in order from January to December. Excluding the side story character Mary, there are 15 mandrake characters in total. After assigning the 12 months from January to December, there were still 3 additional candidates to account for. That’s why February and July have duplicate characters — they were chosen from secondary birth flowers that are also fairly well-known.
