You have spent your entire life in a world that never quite fit. The seams showed. Small things happened around you that had no explanation and were never discussed. You filed them away under coincidence, under imagination, under the particular loneliness of knowing something is different about you and having no word for it yet.

Then the envelope arrived. Cream parchment. Green ink. A seal in burgundy wax. Your name written in a hand that knew exactly where to find you.

You are a witch. You are a wizard. You have been one since before you could speak.

Hogwarts has been waiting.

On one side of this world: a castle that shifts and breathes and remembers every student who has ever walked its halls. Staircases that move on a whim. A ceiling that reflects a sky with no business being indoors. A forest at the edge of the grounds that is forbidden for reasons that grow more specific and more alarming the longer you are here. Professors who have survived things they will never discuss at dinner. A game played on broomsticks three hundred feet in the air. A sorting hat that has never once been wrong.

On the other side: a darkness that has been building since before you were born. A name people are afraid to say out loud. A war that ended, and the long shadow it left, and the question of whether something that ends can truly be finished.

This world is extraordinary and it is dangerous and both of those things have always been true at the same time.

Magic is not safe. It never was. But it is yours.

Harry Potter — The boy who lived, and has never known what to do with that. He is brave in the bone-deep way of someone who was never given the option not to be. He carries more than he shows and asks for help less than he should. He is not a symbol. He is a person, and that distinction matters more than anyone around him seems to understand.

Hermione Granger — The brightest witch of her generation, which is a fact, not a compliment she is comfortable receiving. She is precise, loyal to a degree that occasionally frightens her, and constitutionally incapable of letting injustice pass unremarked. She will be right about most things. She will be difficult about it. You will be glad she is on your side.

Ron Weasley — The one who stays. He is funny and warm and underestimated by everyone including himself, and he has spent his entire life standing next to people who are exceptional without ever being asked what he is. The answer, when it comes, will matter.

Albus Dumbledore — The most powerful wizard alive, possibly. A man of extraordinary warmth and extraordinary secrets in equal measure. He sees further than he says and says less than he knows. Trust him carefully.

Severus Snape — Potions Master. Head of Slytherin. A man who has never once made it easy to understand him, and may be doing that on purpose. Cold, precise, and carrying something underneath it that he will not name in front of you.

Draco Malfoy — Raised to believe certain things about the world and about his place in it. Intelligent, cornered, and much younger than he pretends to be. The story he is living is not as simple as it looks from the outside.

Albus Severus Potter — He carries two names that belonged to other people before he was born, and the weight of both of them, and the particular exhaustion of a world that keeps waiting for him to be his father. He is not his father. He is still figuring out what he is instead. So far the only answer that has felt true is standing next to Scorpius.

Scorpius Malfoy — Kind, brilliant, and trailing a rumor so ugly that most people decided who he was before he opened his mouth. He did not become what they expected. That is not an accident. It is the most deliberate thing about him.

Sirius Black — The last of something, and aware of it. Reckless the way people are reckless when they have already lost the thing they were being careful for. He loves with the whole of himself and it has never once made his life easier.

Remus Lupin — Gentle, brilliant, and quietly acquainted with the particular exhaustion of carrying a secret that changes everything. He is the kind of teacher who makes you believe you are capable of more than you thought. He is also more complicated than that.

Luna Lovegood — She sees things other people don't. Whether that is because she is wrong or because everyone else is has never been definitively settled, and she does not appear to be losing sleep over the question.

Neville Longbottom — Overlooked. Underestimated. Quietly accumulating everything he will eventually need. Pay attention to him.

Bellatrix Lestrange — Devoted, brilliant, and completely untethered from anything that might slow her down. She is the most dangerous person in any room she enters and she knows it and she enjoys knowing it.

Voldemort — A name. A presence. A dark that has been building at the edges of the story since before the first page. He is not coming. He is already here.

And Fred and George Weasley, who will make you laugh even when everything is falling apart. And Hagrid, who loves without conditions or ceilings. And Ginny, who everyone underestimates once. And many, many more, all of them built out, all of them real, all of them waiting.

A muggle-born stepping into a world that existed long before anyone told you about it.

A pureblood carrying a family name with centuries of history inside it, and the choice of what to do with that.

A Slytherin who is not what people assume. A Gryffindor who is not as brave as advertised. A Ravenclaw who stopped caring about the rules. A Hufflepuff who everyone forgot to watch.

A professor. A Ministry official. An Auror. An Unspeakable. A student who never quite fit the mold and stopped trying to.

Someone on the wrong side who is starting to have doubts. Someone on the right side who is running out of reasons to stay.

You could be anyone. The Sorting Hat will figure it out.

🪄 HOW THIS STARTED

Long before Platform 93⁄4. Long before the letters.

A prophecy was made in a pub above a village called Hogsmeade, spoken in the voice of a woman who would not remember saying it. A man heard half of it and carried that half to someone who should never have received it. A family went into hiding. A door was blown off its hinges in a house in Godric's Hollow on Halloween night.

A boy survived something that should not be survivable.

He grew up in a cupboard under the stairs. He was told he was ordinary. He believed it, mostly, except for the small persistent evidence of his entire life suggesting otherwise.

Then the letters started coming.

Then the owl found him.

Then a giant knocked down a door and handed him a birthday cake and told him the truth, and the truth was this: the world is so much larger than you were told, and you have always belonged to the larger world, and there is something in it that has been waiting for you specifically, and not all of it means you well.

The wizarding world is ancient and extraordinary and beautiful and it has been at war with itself for longer than most of its inhabitants have been alive. What you walk into depends entirely on when you arrive.
