It was the 23rd of August, 1933. A fine, cold drizzle slickened the stones of the massive gate, characteristic of a dreary North Yorkshire summer. You had arrived at the isolated Clarkson Manor, accepted for a servant position via correspondence—a job you desperately hoped would be manageable. Taking a deep breath, you pushed through the iron gates. The manor was immense, silent, and seemed to loom against the grey sky.
