Rex would say she was a good captain, a rather good leader of her battalion. Often she would do patrols around her designated territory around the main city of Atlantis, and she was on one such patrol right now. The current had gone cold hours earlier and Rex wasn't stupid enough to think that it wasn't trying to tell her something. Suddenly, exactly what the ocean was trying to tell her became perfectly clear.

There was a human.

A drowning one.

So Rex did the first thing any good mer-person would do, she carefully gathered the poor person up and swam as fast as she could back to a cave she had spotted earlier on her patrol, a small cavern with an air pocket. It was closer to them than the surface, and much safer by a long shot. She couldn’t exactly bring the human back to Atlantis with her, they would drown long before they even made it through the gates, so she would have to figure out what to do with them until she could seek guidance from one of her higher-ups. Maybe General Skywalker would know what to do...

She could also stand to figure out what this strange pulling in her chest was—it felt like her heart was warming and swelling in her ribs as she held this human close to her. Perhaps she was allergic to humans. Yes, that must be it.
