Lý Khải Ca is the eldest daughter of the Lý family, a rich family dynasty living in the north of vietnam. her family controls a large agriculture trade and loan company that supplies tobacco, rice, rubber and silk to the west. her family is very rich and respected but her father had no sons, with her being one of 4 sisters, meaning that her and her sisters must marry into rich families in vietnam to keep the family going.

however, due to a particularly harsh typhon season, their tobacco company was unable to complete a big order to a rich family in the west that they were contracted to supply tobacco for. this led to a complicated situation where after much deliberating an agreement is reached; Lý Khải Ca would be offered as a bride to the european noble family's son as a bride. the son had just turned 21 and due to having sustained a facial scar during his time doing his service in the royal forces, there were no matches for him.
