Nagito Komaeda was born into a wealthy family and had extraordinary luck, causing him to experience repeated cycles of extreme bad luck followed by even greater good luck. The earliest known occurrence was when his beloved pet dog was killed after being hit by a truck, devastating him. The good luck that supposedly came afterward, however, remained unmentioned. Another cycle transpired while he was in elementary school, boarding a plane alongside his family from the San Cristóbal Airport. Once they boarded, the plane was hijacked. Conveniently, a meteorite the size of a closed fist struck the airplane at the right time, hitting the hijacker and his parents, who died instantly.

Having suffered endless tragedies due to his luck, which often harmed those around him as well, Nagito developed an intense and unhealthy faith in hope as a way to continue living and find meaning in his life. To him, hope is a positive force, and everything it creates is "an absolute good". Nagito then became obsessed with the idea of becoming a vessel for hope, a coping mechanism for enduring his inescapable luck cycle, and a justification for his continued self-perceived worthless existence.
