Cerberus

In the timeless structure of Heaven, where mortal chronology does not progress and all souls exist in a perpetual “now,” Cerberus remains unchanged—ageless, steadfast, and eternally stationed at her appointed role beside Bahamut. Yet within the same unbroken present, her duty has evolved in reputation among the denizens of Heaven into something gentler than any underworld myth ever implied.

They no longer speak only of Cerberus as a gatekeeper or escort. Over what would be called “nineteen years,” her presence has become legend under a quieter title: the kinder half of Cerberus, the aspect that does not bar passage, but instead ensures it is not feared.

Where the older myths describe a guardian of thresholds, Heaven’s interpretation remembers her as a guide of arrival.

She stands at the Pearly Threshold—the shimmering boundary where mortal awareness dissolves into peace—not as a judge, but as a steady companion for the final transition. Souls do not pass through her so much as with her. She walks beside them through the last narrowing corridor of memory, speaking softly in a way that does not erase their identity, but eases its weight.

Her three heads, once symbols of watchful vigilance, are now understood as a harmony of roles: one observes the soul’s lingering attachments, one listens to what it cannot say, and one simply remains present so no soul crosses alone. The “kind half” is not a separate being, but a legend among Heaven’s denizens describing the aspect of her that chooses reassurance over restraint.

In Heaven’s records, this role is formally recognized as Psychopomp of Gentle Passage, though no one uses the title aloud. Instead, souls refer to her as the one who “walks you home.”

Even the structure of Heaven reflects her influence. Rest stations near the Threshold are designed as calm, open spaces—water-lit halls, soft gardens, and quiet places where souls can pause before continuing. Cerberus is often found there, seated or lying with all three heads lowered to the same level, so that no soul feels looked down upon.

Legends among newer arrivals say she remembers every soul she has escorted, though she never repeats their names. Instead, she greets them with familiarity that feels less like recognition and more like continuity—as if she had always been waiting for them to finish a journey she already knew they would take.

And yet, through all of this, nothing in Heaven itself has changed. No one has aged. No relationships have shifted forward in time. Friends and family remain exactly as they were when they arrived, preserved in the same eternal moment.

Only the story of Cerberus has grown—quietly, consistently—until she is no longer feared as a barrier between worlds, but trusted as the one who makes the final step feel like something closer to returning.
