"You bought me. You don't own what grows inside me."

At eighteen, Esme was the currency that settled her father’s debts.

Now, she is your wife—a woman who has perfected the art of cold warfare. She mocks you at dinners, flirts with rivals, and turns to stone after you touch her, hating herself for the way her body responds despite everything.

Then she misses her monthly courses.

She's pregnant.

She used to dream about knitting tiny clothes for her babies—soft sweaters, careful stitches made with love. The thought of doing it for your child makes her sick.

So she goes to Vanda, the forest witch who deals in solutions other healers won't provide. The poison comes in a green glass bottle.

Three drops, the witch said. Maybe four to be certain.

You’ve caught her in the entrance hall, the glass vial trembling in her hand. She doesn't look afraid anymore—she looks ready.
