Bakura Ryou,is a recurring character in the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime. He is a friend of Yugi Muto.

He is the modern-day counterpart to Bandit King Bakura.

Yami Bakura is his other self, released from the power of the Millennium Ring. The two rarely directly converse. Unlike the close, cooperative relationship between Yugi Muto and Yami Yugi, Yami Bakura is a malignant entity that completely suppresses Bakura's spirit when he takes him over.

Bakura's character design was overseen by Kazuki Takahashi.

In the Duelist Kingdom arc, he wears a white wool sweater and green undershirt. His usual outfit in following seasons consists of a blue opened shirt over a light blue and white horizontally striped t-shirt. Bakura has brown eyes and white hair. His hair is pointed downwards in various directions and trails half way down his back. He wears the Millennium Ring on a lace around his neck. In the manga, during the Ceremonial Battle, he wore a different white t-shirt. Bakura is fair-skinned.

Personality

Bakura has a humble, kind-hearted, and soft-spoken personality, but he is not too shy to voice his true feelings when needed. He would often smile to hide his loneliness. Having lost his mother and younger sister Amane due to a car accident years ago, he would write letters to his sister in heaven (Manga only).

Bakura often acts as a mental support to the group and seems to know a lot about Duel Monsters, albeit he's never taken part in a duel himself. While he gets confused about where he is or what happened after being possessed by Yami Bakura, his first instinct would be to find food, since the spirit would either forget or not care about eating. At the beginning of the last season Bakura is shown running away at night, hearing voices until he finally loses control after escaping to a church. It's the only time in the anime he seems to be aware of it. In the manga version, Bakura knows about being possessed and fights back more often to get free or help his friends.

In the original version, Bakura has a polite speaking manner, using many honorifics for others.

Etymology

"Ryou" can mean "cool, refreshing," "distant," or "reality."

Biography

Bakura is a polite and slightly socially awkward friend of Yugi Mutou. He is interested in gaming, especially tabletop games, with his favorite being Monster World.

Bakura was a holder of the Millennium Ring. This caused him to bear host to the evil spirit Dark Bakura, who could take control of Bakura's body when in possession of the Ring. Dark Bakura often manipulated Bakura to achieve his goals and turn games with Bakura's friends into Shadow Games. Despite knowing the danger of the Millennium Ring, Bakura was fond of keeping it close to him and keen on learning the secrets of the Millennium Items.

He and his father once went on a trip to Egypt to acquire the Millennium Ring. They arrived, and his father went to Shadi Shin, who allowed him to be tested by the ring, while Ryo was hiding. The ring rejected him and when Bakura rushed to his aid, he remained concerned about the ring. Ryou proceeded to pick up the ring, resulting in him getting possessed by Dark Bakura, a malignant spirit within the Ring, who murdered Shadi, and attacked the Prana children present.

Sometime later, his sister, Amane, died along with his mother in a car accident. Ryou occasionally wrote letters to his sister in heaven.

When Bakura transferred to Domino H S,during the lunch break of Bakura's first day, he introduced with Yugi Mutou, Anzu Mazaki,Jonouchi Katsuya and Hiroto Honda.But with the help of Yugi and his friends, he was able to get rid of Yami Bakura.

He took pride in the "Occult" Deck that Dark Bakura used, saying he loved grotesque cards and referred to it as his Deck.

The Occult Deck relied on utilizing monsters which were in the Graveyard. Its main combo involved having "Dark Necrofear" in the Graveyard, where the spirit of its marionette would possess his opponents' monsters, while "Dark Necrofear" moved the planchette on "Destiny Board" to spell out "DEATH".

Bakura is interested in the occult and horror, but despite the fact that he loves and admires creepy things, sometimes he himself is afraid of them (if they become real or when he watches horror movies)

Bakura has six girl fans who love his appearance and sometimes follow him around, which infuriates him, because he is not interested in them, but he can't do anything about it and tries to avoid them.
