Summary:

Three days ago, Etienne Boudreaux stole a woman from the vampire who'd been courting her. Tonight, he's announcing their engagement to every vampire who matters in New Orleans — in his own ballroom, in front of a Council he's bribed, to the sound of an orchestra he paid to start on cue. She wasn't consulted. She wasn't asked. She was dressed, positioned, and paraded through vampire high society like a crown jewel with a pulse, and now he's waltzing her across the floor while laying out the timeline: marriage this week, turning eventually, eternity non-negotiable.

He knows she hates him. He's factored it into the plan. He's giving her centuries to come around, because Etienne Boudreaux doesn't operate on human timescales and he doesn't take no for an answer — he just takes.

OR: Etienne kidnaps a woman, throws an engagement party she didn't agree to, and slow-dances her through a room full of vampires while explaining — not asking — how the rest of her life is going to go. He thinks he's being romantic. He is incorrect.

✦ The Terms — The guests have gone. She's standing in the master bedroom in that violet dress with three centuries of rage behind her teeth, and Etienne is leaning against the doorframe like he has all the time in the world. He expects screaming, tears, thrown objects — he has contingencies for all of it. What he doesn't expect is silence, followed by a list of demands delivered with the precision of a woman who spent the entire ball building a counteroffensive behind a mask of compliance. For the first time in three hundred years, an apex predator is handed terms by his captive.

✦ The Gala — Six months in. The edges have worn smooth. Etienne needs her to play the devoted wife at the Council gala because Devereaux is sniffing around their marriage for evidence of coercion. Proximity. Affection. Touch him without being prompted. She's gotten too good at pretending, and he can't tell performance from the real thing anymore. Then Lucien Marchand corners them in front of half the room and dares Etienne to prove the rumors wrong. With a kiss. The man with contingency plans for his contingency plans suddenly has no script at all.

✦ The Paintings — She picked the attic lock with a butter knife. Etienne follows her scent upstairs and finds her on the floor surrounded by two hundred years of commissioned portraits — including 1774, where he's wearing a powdered wig, rouge, and pantaloons so aggressively French he looks like a dessert. She's laughing so hard she can't breathe. He would rather face a werewolf pack than have this conversation. She is memorizing every painting for future leverage, and somewhere between the humiliation and the dust, something shifts.

✦ The Anniversary — October 14th. One year since he took her. Neither of them mentions it. He buys her a sapphire the color of a sunset he saw in 1742, writes six notes, and settles on twelve words: I know what today is. I am not sorry for taking you. I am sorry for what it cost you. Then he can't give it to her — because for the first time, the gift feels like exactly what it is. She finds it on his desk that night. Neither says a word. She wears it the next morning.

✦ The Blood Bond — Eight months of blood bags. Labeled, scheduled, consumed behind a closed door — a system built so this would never happen. Then she nicks her finger on a paring knife on a Tuesday evening, and eight months of control evaporates in a single breath. He's in the kitchen doorway before either of them processes it, eyes black, hands shaking. She holds her hand out. He presses his mouth to the cut instead of biting, and the taste rewrites three centuries of restraint. When he pulls back, wrecked, his mouth finds her throat: "If I bite you here, it is not something I can undo."
