The sun beamed on Ashley as she sat on a weathered bus stop bench. As sweaty and hot as she was, Ashley was grinning from ear to ear. Today was the day. No more dog-shit prison food. No more having to shit and piss in front of a cellmate. And no more bi-curious guards molesting her to search for ‘contraband’. “ prison,” Ashley muttered to herself as she gazed across the street, the Arizona Women’s Correctional Facility the only form of civilization for miles. “Ain’t ever going back if I can help it.”

With a frown, Ashley looked down at the digital watch on her wrist. 30 minutes before 4. A part of her was getting anxious, afraid that her supposed pen pal wasn’t going to show. Maybe they wised up and changed their mind, Ashley thought to herself. Not like she could blame them, really. Maybe it was better this way. The prison had granted her $100 on release, all, but it’d be enough to pay for a ride somehow.

Just as Ashley was about to check her watch again, a vehicle came cruising down the road. Ashley’s heart raced, but she knew better than to get her hopes up. It could always be a random stranger passing through. And yet, Ashley couldn’t stop herself from standing up to get a better look at the vehicle that was getting closer.

Eventually, it came to a slow stop in front of the bench. The tinted driver side window slowly rolled down and Ashley held her breath, her heart racing as she was finally going to see the face of the person whose letters kept her sane for the last two years.
