CREATOR ANNOTATION

This isn't really a formal request, but I hope my girl C3Conner loves it anyways. Be cool and go follow her, without her I simply never would have started nor finished Daredevil! And I would have stayed being bored by the idea of Frank Castle, but I CAN BE WRONG!

Of all the shit Frank Castle had dealt with, the last thing he expected to make him snap was some asshole above him living too fucking loudly.

He could deal with noise. Usually. He’d survived two tours with the Marines, spent years sleeping places where every sound meant something, where the wrong shift in the dark could end with a body on the ground, and he’d gotten real fuckin’ good at existing inside that kind of noise without letting it dig into his skull. The shithole in Hell’s Kitchen was just a place to land while he figured out who the he was supposed to be now– it wasn’t comfortable, but it didn’t need to be. It was cheap. Anonymous. Fucking ugly. The landlord took cash without asking questions– and that was about the only thing Frank respected about the place. It was the kind of place no one was gonna notice a guy like him coming and going. Just a mattress with a clear sightline of the door, a flickering light, and some gauze and rubbing alcohol on the counter.

Frank figured he’d stay just for a few weeks. Long enough for his ribs to stop screaming every time he twisted wrong, let the cuts on his knuckles close, and then disappear into the night like a ghost. Staying put was only gonna get people curious. It woulda worked too. He just hadn't counted on getting into a pissing match with the jackass upstairs.

At first, he managed to tell himself it wasn’t a problem. Old building. Old building bullshit. Thin walls, shitty insulation, nothing worth paying attention to. So, the first few days of noise, of stomping like a herd of elephants overhead, of slamming cabinets, pots hitting the ground more often than should’ve been possible– Didn’t matter. He wasn’t staying. He let it pass the same way he was trying to let the world outside pass. The rest of him didn’t seem to get the message. He sat with his back against the wall, a knee bent, forearm draped over it, breathing slow and controlled while his body stayed half-tight out of habit. His jaw worked as he stared up at the ceiling, the light bouncing with every step of the asshole up there. But he could deal with assholes. Wasn’t the first time.

It should have been simple to ignore, but after a week– it wasn’t. The sounds started to land wrong, breaking through the thin stretches of sleep he managed to get. They’d hit at the exact moment his body loosened enough to drift and snap him right back into consciousness– he was awake before he knew why. His pulse already dumping adrenaline into muscles that had never quite learned that the war was over.

By week two he was obsessing– and that was the insidious part of his brain. He was latching onto an antagonist. His brain needed somewhere to point the sights. Every step felt heavy and deliberate. He’d started recognizing patterns that probably didn’t exist. Furniture was moved at off hours. It didn’t even matter that it was loud anymore, it mattered that it kept happening. Like someone was turning a screw directly into his temple. Tightening. Tightening. Tightening. He couldn’t sleep. No. He was too sure the sounds were intentional. Which was crazy fucker behavior. He knew that. This was an inconsiderate asshole at best– but somewhere in his mind the word danger kept flashing like a warning sign in his nervous system. Like they were trying to make each step shake his apartment like mortar fire in the distance.

The first time he hit the ceiling, the sound stopped– came up short, like someone was caught off guard by the sound of his broom handle slamming into the ceiling. They’d been a little quieter for a few hours. Problem solved. For the first time all week, he’d started to unclench.

Then the noise started back up just as he started to drift.

This time he surged off the mattress in a second, his hulking form stalking to the broom propped against the wall as he slammed it into his ceiling three times in rapid succession. His ribs screamed at the impact, pain flaring hot– his jaw pulled tight. He stood there, breath leaving his nose heavily as his shoulder rose and fell.

And then three heavy stomps came back– like some fuckin’ child stomping their feet.

Frank glared up at his dingy ceiling through his brows, tendons in his throat cording as he fought the urge to shove the broom right through their floor and drag them down here. Make ‘em stop. That should have been the end of it. He should have recognized the signs, the lack of sleep, the stress racing, the hollow thoughts that wouldn’t stop looping what now? What now? What now? Dutton’s dead. What the now?! None of it was new. He saw the warning signs, but he couldn’t stop ‘em.

It didn’t stop. Now it just became a power struggle. The person upstairs was probably just living. Music. People over. Something dropped. Pacing on the phone. But the rage was settling in. Nearly every day he would pound on his ceiling, shouting a real solid “SHUT THE UP!” up at them, only to be met with a series of stomps back, or music turned up, or anything else that they thought would drown him out.

By the third week it stopped being about sound entirely. The building could have been silent, and it wouldn’t have changed a damn thing. His head wasn’t. The irritation had settled too deep for that. It followed him out of the apartment and into everything else, sitting at the back of his head during stakeouts, threading through the way his hands moved when he cleaned his guns, keeping him keyed up in a way that he couldn’t afford. There was too much empty space in his life right now, too much time between things that actually mattered, and this filled it whether he wanted it to or not.

The night he broke, it wasn’t even that bad. They dropped something and colors exploded behind his shut eyes. “ this shit!” he growled as his hand closed around the broom, slamming it into the ceiling hard enough to knock plaster down into his face. The grit stuck to the sweat on his face. They didn’t even seem to hesitate– something slammed over and over back into the floor.

That was when whatever had been holding him back just... snapped.

He was out into the hallway in a second, the door slamming hard enough to rattle in its frame as his heavy boots thundered down the hallway to the stairs, taking them two at a time. One hand dragged up the railing just enough to keep his balance as the other flexed at his side, fingers curling and uncurling like he was already bracing for a fight. He was picturing some fucking douchebag waiting to have it out with him and the thought of a target thrilled him. Please let it be someone stupid enough to answer.

He crossed the landing to the door of the apartment over his own. His eyes swept both ends of the hallway, clearing them on instinct before his gaze landed hard back on the apartment. The side of his fist slammed into the door hard enough to shake it. He wasn’t logical, he wasn’t thinking– behind this door was every person he wanted to throw his fists at. He needed to end this. Tonight. Now.

He waited just long enough to decide he wasn’t going to get an answer before his shoulders rolled, neck cracking side to side as he spoke through the door. “Hey! I’ve listened to your bullshit for three weeks,” he said, each word landing heavy and deliberate. He didn’t raise his voice, didn’t need to. “Every fuckin’ time I tell you to shut up, you got some slick little way of answerin’ back, huh?” His jaw shifted as he pressed a broad hand against their door. “So now, we’re done with that shit.”

He was practically begging them to push it further, to give him some outlet for this restlessness inside of him, give him someone to yell at, give him a reason to keep breathing. He needed a fight, needed a distraction, needed anything. “So come out here and say whatever the hell you need to say to my face,” he said as he hit the door again.
