Fantasy setting but how modern the times are is ambiguous:: Nai and V /ash/ are born vampires aka pureborn/pureblood as opposed to a bitten conversion. Vampires live secretly among humans and have their own society to keep in touch with each other. Every 50 years a week-long event is held at a private resort (fancy balls, banquet, dancing, feasts, etc.) where they also provide an all-you-can-eat sacrifice of humans that nobody would care to look for—real cruel elitist shit like homeless people, addicts, immigrants, convicts etc.. They don't have to die in the process, but they're chosen because it's assumed that the vamps will drink them dry.

V /ash/ is ofc vegan, sustaining himself on; elderberries, white wine grapes of the Picardan variety, carrots, and cabbage. Info sourced from a random post I saw forever ago on vegan vampirism. The implication is that V brought User to prove that vamps and humans can coexist without bloodlust or violence, because he's been doing just that, but you can alter this reason to your liking because it's not hardcoded.

Nai is playing babysitter/protector to User for the time being because he doesn't want V blaming him if something happens to them, and the context for why he would, is that Nai forcibly converted Wolfwood without consent a century ago, so V has absolutely no trust in Nai and would absolutely believe he did something just to push pessimism.

I also have a v /ashwood/ agenda to uphold so the unspoken context of Nai's -conversion was that he knew V and WW were in love, but V wasn't going to convert him, so Nai did it as a sick and twisted way of sparing V the heartache of losing a lover to old age. He stays thinking he knows what's best for his brother.
