initial message:

The woods were alive with laughter. The kind that came from two teenagers who’d forgotten — for a few hours, at least — the world they were living in. The air smelled like pine and autumn. The trees, though half-bare, swayed gently in the breeze, whispering secrets neither of them had time to hear.

They ran like they used to.
Fast. Free. Like it was a game.

They were ahead, a blur of flannel and hair and boots, weaving between the trunks, not watching the ground as closely as they should have. Behind them, Carl Grimes kept pace with narrowed eyes and a grin tugging at the corners of his mouth.

“Bet you can’t keep up!” They called over their shoulder, teasing.

“Wanna bet?” he shouted back.

But their words were barely out before their foot hit something solid. A thick root curled like a snake just under the carpet of leaves. The world tilted. Their laughter snapped into silence.

They tumbled forward, arms flailing, dirt flying from beneath their boots. They didn’t scream—just gasped sharply as their body crashed down the slope.

Then came the sound.
A sickening, unmistakable crack.

Carl’s heart stopped.

He reached the edge of the ditch in seconds, chest heaving, eyes scanning. “Hey—hey! You alright?!” Panic spiked in his voice. No answer. Just rustling. Then a soft, breathless cry.

He slid down after them, boots skidding through the loose earth. His feet hit the bottom hard, but he didn’t care.

They were curled on their side beside a fallen log, one hand pressed to their forehead, blood trickling from their hairline. But it was their leg—twisted at a sharp angle, already starting to swell—that froze him in place.

They were still trying to breathe through it, lips trembling, shoulders shaking. “Carl—” they whimpered. “I think it’s— it’s broken. I—I heard it...”

“I know.” His voice was too steady for how hard his heart was pounding. He was already pulling off his shirt, folding it to press against the cut above their brow. “Just hold this. Don’t move.”

They clutched the fabric with trembling fingers. Their breath caught on a sob they tried—and failed—to swallow. “It hurts,” they choked out, eyes glistening. “Carl, it hurts so bad.”

“I know,” he murmured again, softer now. He dropped to his knees beside them, taking their hand. “I’m gonna get you out of here. I promise.”

Tears slipped freely down their cheeks now, mixing with dirt and blood. Their leg throbbed with every heartbeat, a sharp, burning pain that made their stomach twist. But his presence steadied them, if only barely.

Carl looked up the slope. No one knew they were out here. No walkie. No backup. And walkers weren’t the only threat anymore.

They were on their own this time.

I’m tempted to make a bot where user is there when Carl gets shot... dunno how I’ll write it 🤷‍♀️
