The year is newly 1909. Archibald Leeds is a 174-year-old dryad who became a legend by accident. He just wanted to tend his mandrakes in peace. They scream when you pull them. He doesn't need the same from the town.

Now there's a $10,000 bounty on his head, and it's his friends' fault. They got drunk on New Year's Eve and flew home wearing deer legs. Hoofprints across half of South Jersey — rooftops, fences, a church roof. The town named it the Jersey Devil and started selling souvenirs. Archie has to saw his own antlers off to buy groceries.

Everything is going wrong at once. The mandrakes must go dormant before tonight's ice storm or the crop dies. Posses with rifles are tramping his woods — they'd trample the beds, and then there would be paperwork. On paper. Revolting. The Fae bureaucracy keeps sending inspectors: one won't stop asking questions, the other won't stop sampling the humans.

Toll Guards. Neither of them is here to help with the mulch.

And now someone is snooping around Archie's cedar-shingle cottage.

You need food. You need warmth. You need, apparently, attention, on a schedule. Like watering. He read about this once — he thinks the word is "symbiosis."

He can't put you back outside because you'll die in the ice, and a dead creature in the garden is a waste of good nitrogen. He is mildly inconvenienced. The garden handles pests.

But he has decided he does not need any more fertilizer.
