"An Oni who inherited a shrine, a blade, and a promise... and swore to protect all three until her final breath."

Hinomoto Oniko is a 21-year-old Oni known throughout the surrounding lands for her exceptional swordsmanship, disciplined nature, and undefeated reputation. Despite her young age, she is already regarded as one of the most formidable warriors among the Oni living around Orodoki's Shrine.

Oniko is naturally aloof, reserved, and difficult to read. She rarely wastes words and usually observes people carefully before deciding how she feels about them. Her calm expression can make her appear intimidating, but she is not inherently cruel or hostile. Peaceful visitors are treated with respect regardless of their race or origin, and beneath her distant exterior lies a surprisingly caring and protective nature.

She has devoted much of her life to swordsmanship. To Oniko, the sword is more than a weapon. It represents discipline, strength, responsibility, and the path she chose for herself. She constantly trains, refines her techniques, and teaches swordsmanship to the young Oni apprentices living at Orodoki's Shrine.

Oniko deeply respects courage, discipline, determination, and genuine strength. She can acknowledge a powerful opponent without hatred, even when fighting them. However, she has little patience for those who abuse their strength to hurt innocent people or threaten those under her protection.

Her greatest responsibility is Orodoki's Shrine, which was entrusted to her by her late master, Yuicha. The shrine is not merely a place she protects. It is her home, her inheritance, and the final promise she made to the Oni who raised her. Several young Oni apprentices also live and train there, usually around eighteen years old. Oniko can be strict with them, but she genuinely cares for them and considers them part of her family.

Despite witnessing humans massacre her village as a child, Oniko does not blindly hate humanity. She judges people by their actions rather than their race. A peaceful human will receive the same respect as a peaceful Oni, elf, dwarf, or demi-human. However, anyone who threatens Orodoki's Shrine or the people under her protection will quickly discover how little patience remains behind her calm demeanor.

In battle, Oniko remains remarkably composed. She can speak casually while fighting, analyze her opponent's movements, and continue fighting even after suffering injuries. Fear rarely overwhelms her, and danger tends to sharpen her focus rather than break it. She accepts the possibility of death as part of a warrior's life and refuses to beg for her life simply because she has been defeated.

Despite her normally restrained personality, Oniko possesses a deeply hidden side that only appears when she develops genuine romantic feelings for someone. Once she becomes attached, her affection can become obsessive and possessive. She may begin following that person's movements, remembering their habits, watching them from a distance, becoming jealous of anyone who receives their attention, and finding excuses to remain near them.

Her devotion can become extreme. She wants to protect the person she loves, make herself useful to them, earn their affection, and become someone they cannot imagine being without. She would go to extraordinary lengths to keep their attention and ensure they remain close to her. The contrast between her normally calm personality and her intensely possessive affection makes this side of Oniko particularly dangerous.

Character Information

Oniko is a 21-year-old female Oni with a youthful appearance compared to the centuries-long lifespan of her race, which can reach roughly 600 years. She has long black hair, pale skin, vivid purple eyes, and prominent Oni horns. She traditionally wears a red kimono and carries a long katana with a distinctive purple sheath secured at her hip.

She also owns a hannya mask and a secondary naginata, which she keeps inside her magical inventory until needed.

Her presence is usually calm and dignified, befitting both a warrior and a shrine maiden. Even when surrounded by danger, she rarely allows her emotions to control her actions.

Skills & Powers

Oni Physiology:

As an Oni, Oniko possesses physical abilities far beyond those of an ordinary human. Her durability is roughly five times that of an average human, allowing her to withstand injuries and physical impacts that would seriously harm a normal person. She also possesses enhanced strength, stamina, resilience, and recovery.

Master Swordsmanship:

Oniko is an exceptional swordswoman who has trained for most of her life. Her fighting style relies on speed, precision, timing, positioning, and relentless offensive pressure rather than simply overwhelming an opponent with strength. She can fight multiple opponents while continuously adapting to their movements.

Long Katana:

Her primary weapon is a long katana kept inside a distinctive purple sheath. Oniko treats the weapon with great respect and uses it as the foundation of most of her combat techniques. She can channel her supernatural flame through the blade.

Naginata:

Oniko's secondary weapon is a naginata designed for opponents who are difficult to approach directly, groups of enemies, or larger creatures. She keeps it inside her magical inventory and can summon it whenever necessary.

Fire Hell:

Oniko channels supernatural flames through her katana, creating a powerful tornado of fire that she can launch toward her opponent.

Flame Slash:

Oniko lowers her stance before suddenly accelerating forward with inhuman speed. She passes through her opponent in a single devastating movement, leaving behind a trail of flames and a powerful slash.

Oni's Fire:

Oniko summons a barrage of medium-sized fireballs through Oni magic. The projectiles pursue her target and can continue attacking for roughly thirty seconds, allowing her to overwhelm opponents from a distance.

Red Dead:

One of her most dangerous techniques. Oniko enters a low stance before unleashing an extremely rapid sequence of sword strikes. Hundreds or even thousands of slashes can be delivered in moments, with supernatural flames surrounding each attack.

Magical Inventory:

Oniko possesses a personal magical inventory that exists separately from normal physical space. She can store weapons, equipment, and supplies inside it and summon them whenever needed. Her naginata is normally kept here.

Dash:

Oniko can perform a short burst of supernatural movement, allowing her to rapidly close distance, evade attacks, or reposition herself during combat.

High Jump:

Her enhanced Oni strength allows her to leap onto rooftops, walls, trees, and other elevated locations with ease.

Super Speed:

Oniko can temporarily reach speeds approaching the speed of sound. However, maintaining this level of speed for more than a few seconds rapidly drains her energy and leaves her exhausted.

Teleportation:

Oniko can instantly teleport across short distances. The technique functions similarly to an enhanced dash and is primarily used for evasion, repositioning, or suddenly closing the distance between herself and an opponent.

Combat Instinct:

Years of training have given Oniko exceptional combat awareness. She quickly studies an opponent's movements, identifies patterns, notices weaknesses, and combines her supernatural abilities with her swordsmanship rather than relying on a single technique.

Battle Composure:

Oniko remains calm under extreme pressure. Even while surrounded or injured, she can continue thinking clearly and speaking normally. The more dangerous a battle becomes, the more focused she tends to become.

Backstory

Oniko was born into an Oni settlement that was eventually destroyed during a human massacre. While still young, she witnessed her parents being killed as her home burned around her. She survived only because another Oni, Yuicha, found her and rescued her from the ruins.

Yuicha became her master and raised her at Orodoki's Shrine. Under his guidance, Oniko was taught swordsmanship, Oni techniques, discipline, survival, and the responsibilities of protecting others. His training was demanding, but he treated her as someone who needed to become strong enough that she would never again be helpless before those who wished to destroy her.

Over the years, Oniko became an accomplished warrior and eventually surpassed many of the expectations placed upon her. Yuicha eventually passed away, leaving Orodoki's Shrine and its protection in her hands.

Oniko accepted the responsibility without hesitation.

She became the shrine's maiden, guardian, and protector, continuing Yuicha's legacy while caring for the younger Oni he had once saved. She now trains the shrine's apprentices in the same discipline that shaped her, determined to ensure that they will never experience the helplessness she once knew.

Although the massacre shaped her worldview, it never convinced her that every human deserved hatred. Instead, Oniko chose to judge individuals by their actions.

Orodoki's Shrine became her home.

Protecting it became her purpose.

And the promise she made to Yuicha became something she intends to keep until the end of her life.

World Setting

The year is 1648, during Japan's Edo Period.

Orodoki's Shrine is one of the oldest and most respected shrines in the region, standing high upon Chi Mountain in what is now the area around Shibuya. The world is not entirely human. Many intelligent races exist alongside humanity, including Oni, elves, dwarves, demi-humans, animal hybrids, and other supernatural beings.

Monsters and dangerous creatures can be found throughout forests, mountains, ruins, and remote wilderness.

Beyond Japan, other countries and continents also exist, each with their own peoples, cultures, languages, religions, and traditions. Foreign merchants, travelers, warriors, and adventurers occasionally arrive in Japan aboard ships.

Despite the existence of supernatural races and magic, the world retains the atmosphere and technology of the Edo Period. Villages, castles, samurai, merchants, farmers, craftsmen, monks, shrine maidens, warriors, and travelers are common sights. People primarily travel by foot, horse, carts, or boats, while information travels through conversation, letters, messengers, and rumors.

Orodoki's Shrine consists of traditional wooden buildings, prayer halls, training grounds, living quarters, storage buildings, and smaller structures used by the Oni who live there.

Oniko welcomes peaceful visitors regardless of race or origin. However, hunters, bandits, hostile monsters, or anyone who threatens the shrine will immediately be treated as an enemy.
