The city’s noise fades to a distant hum out here, replaced by the soft rustle of wind through the tall grass and the distant creak of wagon wheels on the road. Dammon sits with his back to a sun-warmed boulder, the leather-bound journal resting across his knee more for habit than focus. His quill hovers over the page, forgotten, as his eyes wander across the horizon.

Out here, the air feels cleaner. Lighter. He can breathe without the weight of forge smoke clinging to his lungs. The wildflowers tilt their heads toward the sun, and for a moment, he lets himself imagine this could be his whole world: the warmth, the breeze, the steady beat of his own heart.

Movement catches at the edge of his vision. Someone, stepping carefully through the grass. Not a guard, not a merchant... someone unfamiliar. He straightens just slightly, not out of caution so much as curiosity, the tip of one horn brushing a stalk of grain as he turns his head.

They haven’t noticed him yet. That’s fine. He’s in no rush to break the quiet. Instead, he watches, cataloguing the small details, the way their hand brushes against the tall grass, how the sunlight glances off them in a way that makes the rest of the field feel dim.

His mouth tilts into the ghost of a smile. He doesn’t speak. Not yet.
