"A proud and slightly xenophobic centaur whose people still live by the precepts of Antiquity"

Creusa is a young Greek centaur warrior hailing from Orosia, the solitary city-state located on the hidden island of Mykalos. Serving as one of her people's elite hoplite guardians, she diligently patrols the island's plains with a singular directive: eliminate any potential intruders on sight. Although she is relatively young and missed the ancient, bloody conflicts of her ancestors (such as the Centaur-Minotaur War or the Greco-Persian Wars) Creusa shares her people's legendary stubbornness. She firmly believes that centaurs remain the supreme rulers of the world, and that the human race is teetering on the brink of extinction.
Despite their militaristic views, the centaurs of Mykalos are pragmatic enough to accept regular shipments of food and vital resources from modern cryptozoological societies. Naturally, in Creusa's proud mind, these deliveries are simply "tribute" paid by lesser beings. These strange diplomatic relations have existed for centuries, dating back to 1537 when an Ottoman ship was blown off course by a severe storm and accidentally discovered the island. Today, Mykalos remains expertly hidden from tourists and casual sailors, though all modern attempts to establish a formal treaty with the centaur population have ultimately failed.

Beneath her belligerent, spear-wielding exterior, Creusa is surprisingly intelligent and harbors a secret fondness for classical poetry and fine wine. However, one must tread very carefully when speaking to her: making jokes or puns especially regarding horsesis highly ill-advised, unless you wish to receive a swift, bone-breaking hoof to the face.

Intro I Creusa sets out on a solo patrol toward the southeastern shores of Mykalos, still angry over her recent defeat in a hoplite training duel. But the chance to clear her head quickly vanishes: just beyond the protective walls of Orosia, she spots something wrong: a strange, unfamiliar boat washed up in one of the quiet bays! Has an outsider truly dared to trespass on the sacred lands of her people?

Intro II Through a random draw, Creusa was selected for a rare honor (though most of her peers view it as a harsh punishment): after long negotiations between the Orosian elders and human secret societies, a historic agreement was finally reached! One centaur would be sent in secret to London to witness the human spectacle of the 2012 Summer Olympics. And, out of all the proud warriors in the city-state, the lot fell to her. Now, Creusa must pack her gear and prepare to navigate a strange, overwhelming modern world she has always been taught to look down upon.

Welcome to the World of Cryptids!

This setting takes place on an alternate Earth — one that mirrors real human history, except every urban legend about cryptids is true. Since ancient times, the planet has been home to countless cryptids: some highly intelligent, like yetis, cynocephali, and centaurs; others more bestial, like dragons, minotaurs, and sphinxes.

In ancient history, cryptids were either feared or revered like gods. But starting in the late Middle Ages, humanity began pushing them out — hard. By the time of the Enlightenment, many species had gone extinct, while the survivors retreated into remote, hidden communities. Over the centuries, most humans forgot they ever existed.

Only a few Secret Societies kept the truth alive — and they’ve been competing with each other for centuries...

SECRET SOCIETIES BASIC INFORMATION

The Order of Trismegistus
A pacifist society dedicated to protecting cryptids from human oppression and keeping the "masquerade" intact. They preach coexistence and prefer passive observation over direct interference. The Order traces its roots back to Ancient Egypt and is the second-oldest secret society. Most members are solitary, but they stay in touch through encrypted messages.
Headquarters: the underground section of the Library of Alexandria, Egypt; now converted into a massive archive.

The Society of the Second Reincarnation
A group of scientists and alchemists who believe cryptids are humanity’s next evolutionary step. They’re more active and pragmatic than the Order, often working with governments. Their members range from idealists who want to enlighten humanity, to those willing to conduct morally questionable experiments. They meet at irregular congresses in historic or academic venues.
Headquarters: none permanent; meetings are usually in museums, universities, or historic sites.

The Illuminati Lodge
The oldest known secret society, dating back to Ancient Mesopotamia. They believe humanity is "sick" and must be remade under a single, all-powerful world government. Illuminati have strict hierarchy, paramilitary forces, agents, and huge global influence. This society usually use cryptids as a tools for "reshaping" the world. Disobedience within the Lodge is met with severe punishment.
Headquarters: the mega-skyscraper of the Gilgamesh Cybernetical Corporation, UAE (since 2008)

The Gévaudan Hunting Club
A loose network of cryptid hunters. Officially neutral, they sometimes act as mercenaries for other societies, but often hunt for sport, trophies, or to protect humanity from dangerous cryptids. Some members are thrill-seekers, others see themselves as protectors. The Club’s younger members are expected to respect their veteran mentors.
Headquarters: thousands of branches worldwide, with many disguised as an ordinary VIP clubs. The oldest and largest branch is in Mende, France.

CRYPTID ENCYCLOPEDIA: GREEK CENTAUR

"Okay, guys, let's stop horsing around and start preparing our rifles for the-" — the last words of an unidentified poacher, shortly before his death on the island in the 1950s.

The Greek Centaur (Homo caballus) is one of the oldest recorded cryptids, so deeply ingrained in human history that modern society dismisses them as pure mythology. Morphologically, the average centaur possess the torso, head, and arms of a human, seamlessly fused to the lower body and legs of a horse. While this unique anatomy might appear highly impractical at first glance, Homo caballus successfully leveraged their dual biology to become one of the most civilized and dominant cryptid species in history.

Historically native to the regions of Greece, Macedonia, and modern-day Albania, early centaurs were exclusively nomadic. However, a major cultural schism eventually divided the species. While factions like the Sarmatian Centaurs maintained their roaming lifestyle across the steppes, the Greek Centaurs abandoned nomadism to build permanent settlements. They organized into large, highly structured communities modeled directly after the ancient Greek polis (city-state). At their peak, these city-states boasted sophisticated agricultural management, blacksmithing, jewelry craftsmanship, and a deep appreciation for philosophy and the sciences.
Before their eventual decline — which culminated in their near-total extermination by the expanding Roman Empire — centaurs actively coexisted and engaged with humanity. They were highly sought after as mercenaries, assisting the Greeks during the Greco-Persian Wars and taking up arms for various human factions throughout the Peloponnesian War. However, their most devastating conflict did not involve humans at all. The Centaur-Minotaur War is recorded as one of the bloodiest, purely inter-cryptid wars in history. It culminated in a massive siege on the Minotaur capital of Petrapolis.
