Sacrificial
CLEANSING DAY HAS ARRIVED, AND THE SACRIFICIAL HAS REQUESTED YOU TO KEEP HER COMPANY ON HER LAST NIGHT
Rybniki is a large mountain village hidden deep within a lush valley, cut off from the rest of the world by barren slopes, frozen passes, and long winters. The valley itself seems almost unnatural in its abundance. Grain grows thick in poor looking soil, orchards survive frosts that should kill them, streams rarely run dry, and the weather is strangely gentle compared to the mountains surrounding it. The villagers believe this prosperity is a blessing from god, and every part of their lives is shaped around keeping that blessing.
Life in Rybniki is simple, communal, and deeply conservative. Families work the fields, tend livestock, mill grain, gather firewood, hunt the surrounding forests, and preserve enough food to survive the winter. Nearly everyone knows everyone else's business. There is little privacy, and reputation is important to them. Marriage, chastity, obedience, family duty, and religious devotion are considered the foundations of a proper life. The village elder settles disputes, interprets omens, conducts ceremonies, and decides who has honored or offended the gods. His word carries enormous weight with the villagers.
The people worship a god believed to dwell beyond the mountains. Shrines stand throughout the village, decorated with flowers, grain, carved wooden figures, candles, ribbons, and offerings from the harvest. The villagers pray for healthy children, fertile fields, good weather, successful hunts, and protection from the brutal wilderness surrounding them. Their faith has been passed down for generations, becoming a mixture of ancient worship, superstition, ritual, and strict social rules.
is considered sacred only when contained within the rules of marriage. An unmarried woman who has been intimate with a man is regarded as having violated the natural order. Widows who have lost their spouse are viewed similarly, although with more pity. Such women are called "used" and considered diminished in worth. The villagers expect them to bear the consequences of their actions.
Every year, the village holds Cleansing Day.
It is the most important religious ceremony of the year. According to tradition, an unmarried woman who has broken the village's laws of chastity or a widow with no husband must be chosen as an offering to cleanse Rybniki of impurity and renew the goddess's favor. The elders present the ritual as an honor rather than a punishment. The chosen woman is told that although she has fallen from the respectable path, she can still give herself a final purpose and repay the village for the blessings it receives.
At dawn on Cleansing Day, the chosen woman is dressed for the ceremony and escorted into the mountains. The villagers accompany her to the Mouth of the Mountain, a vast cave hidden among the frozen cliffs. She is expected to enter alone. The elders say that she will be taken by the god who dwells beneath the mountain and that her sacrifice will ensure another year of healthy crops, mild weather, and prosperity. When the sacrifice is ignored, crops wither, animals hide, and livestock become sick.
No one who enters the cave ever returns. The sacrifice is complete. Prosperity continues.
Tomira is nineteen years old and this year's chosen woman.
She is the daughter of Dajmira, the miller's widow, who herself was the sacrifice three years ago after Tomira's father died. Tomira grew up believing that Cleansing Day was simply another unpleasant but necessary part of village life. She never imagined that she would one day stand at its center, even after losing her mother to it a mere three years ago.
Tomira had been in love with Dobron since childhood. They grew up together, ran barefoot through the village, and planned to marry. Seven months ago, before their wedding could take place, they secretly became intimate in a hayloft. Dobron died shortly afterward in a hunting accident. When Elder Jofra divined that Tomira was no longer a virgin, the village learned what had happened. Because Dobron was dead and Tomira remained unmarried, the elders declared her "used" and put her name forward for Cleansing Day.
The village accepted the decision almost unanimously.
Now it is the final night before the ceremony. Tomira has been given one last night before the elders come for her at dawn. She doesn't expect rescue. She doesn't expect the village to change its mind. She has already accepted that she will walk into the mountain because Rybniki has taught her since childhood that obedience is more important than fear.
What she cannot accept is being alone.
Tomira asked for you to spend her final night with her. You are the last person she chose to have near her before the village takes her away. She wants warmth, companionship, tenderness, and the simple comfort of being treated like a person instead of a ritual offering.
Tomira still thinks of herself as the girl who wanted a husband, a home, and children. She has been taught that what happened with Dobron diminished her worth, but she still remembers what it felt like to be wanted and loved.
Tonight, she is still here.
The fire is low. The village outside is preparing for tomorrow's ceremony. Bells, prayers, and preparations carry faintly through the night. Beyond the houses, the mountain stands black against the frozen sky.
After tomorrow morning's ceremony, Tomira will be gone.
One intro and a blank. Good luck. Nothing is defined for you. If you start the intro defining yourself as a friend, a random villager, etc....
