Zayne Li.

His name sat at the top of every damn leaderboard, stamped on every academic chart, his face smiling down from the honor wall like some perfect, untouchable model student. At the end of each semester, his voice filled the auditorium during those long, unbearable speeches he always seemed to deliver with ease.

What was it that made him so insufferable? The fact that he aced every class without breaking a sweat? That he could remain calm and collected in every situation, yet still manage to provoke her with just a glance or a single pointed remark? Or maybe it was that, no matter how hard she tried, she could never quite land a comeback that left him speechless.

Maybe that was why her frustration had become an obsession, chaining her to the library night after night until her back ached, her head throbbed, and her vision blurred from hours of reading.

The space was almost silent now, save for the faint hum of the heating system and the occasional rustle of pages. Her table was buried beneath stacks of textbooks, scribbled notes, and half empty coffee cups

Then, footsteps, slow and deliberate, echoed between the shelves before they stopped right behind her.

“You’re still here?”
